Joseph Jacoby director, screenwriter and author, began his career as a writer & creator of television game shows and as a puppeteer for The Bunin Puppets and The Bil Baird Marionettes. He also wrote for the NBC game show "Let's Make A Deal" and the courtroom drama "Magistrate's Court" (Dan Enright/Screen Gems Intl.).
His first theatrical feature, "Shame, Shame...Everybody Knows Her Name," is a permanent part of The Museum of Modern Art's Collection In New York.
He next directed, co-wrote, and produced his first major motion picture, "Hurry Up, Or I'll Be 30" featuring Danny DeVito - DeVito's earliest theatrical feature. The picture was distributed by Joseph E. Levine to national critical-acclaim. It was honored at the USA Film Festival as "One of the Best Citizen-Directed Films of the Year" and hailed by The New York Times, with noted film critic Vincent Canby calling it "A wryly affectionate portrait of a younger 'Marty'." In December 2009, The New York Times re-printed Vincent Canby's review in a piece that selected 3 critically acclaimed low-budget films of the 1970s.
Jacoby has written-directed-produced 5 motion pictures to date -- Distributed by Warner Bros., Worldvision Enterprises, Avco Embassy, Paramount Pictures and seen on the PBS stations and NHK, Japan.
In the 90s, Jacoby Founded Children's Video Theater with the purpose of producing high-quality family and children's programming for television and video. To that end, Jacoby Entertainment, Ltd. acquired world rights, in all media, to the Bil Baird characters, famous for their appearance in "The Sound of Music."
"Davy Jones' Locker" is an original family musical starring The Bil Baird Marionettes. This evergreen film was awarded The UNiIMA Citation of Excellence, founded by Jim Henson, and chosen for the Ten Years Winner's Circle by The Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta. It was the recipient of the Gold for Children's Films at Worldfest, Houston, and is currently airing on the PBS stations, nationwide.
Jacoby's other film awards include the Gold for "Best Director" and the "Special Jury Award" (Virgin Islands Film Festival), and the Festival De Deauville Du Cinema Americain for "The Great Bank Hoax," featuring an All-Star cast. (Warner Bros.). TCM
In March of 2006, The Museum of Modern Art honored Mr. Jacoby with a one-week retrospective of his film work to date, coinciding with the publication of his memoir, "Boy On A String" (Carroll & Graf Publishers), with an Introduction by Martin Scorsese.
